old books are like old friends

Alexander the Great

I have to admit I struggled with this theme. But you wonderful people truly excelled, as ever. As I searched our house for antiques, I could find none. At one point, I even resurrected an Apple Newton from 1993, which counts as an antique around here (and amazingly, it still works!). However, I did find many dog-eared, well-read and loved books. Books are so good at evoking memories; we all remember reading favourite books, and feeling sad when we finished them. I gave my husband the full edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica from 1911 a few years back. He writes books about the history of technology and I thought they might help in his quest. More recently however, I have found Ella browsing their pages. Here she is looking up her favourite historical figure, Alexander the Great.

I chose the image below because it quite simply made me smile; the choice of books, the vintage style. I too enjoyed Beatrix Potter as a child and have read her books to our children. I hope to pass on our copies to their children for them to read.

I've been looking through your reflection entries; I love the way you guys keep me on my toes!

oh, you've gladdened my heart ... since i'm a librarian AND an old book collector (probably the one thing that i might be accused of hoarding...)

both photos are lovely -- as a kid i used to read our old encyclopedias for fun, and i still have my grandma's old beatirx potters. love the photo corner treatment on that photo -- like the books are a beloved member of the family with a special place in the family album.

Love it! Books are cherished antiques for us too... and I still fondly remember reading my dad's set of Encyclopedia Britannica, by the way :)

I just love the way you shoot your kids. you show the real essence of them in your shots. You capture just enough of them in their environment to show who they really are. very nice. I love your pairing. happy saturday!

Ahhhh, books. They are my weakness. I can go out with a shopping list and come back with only books. I love my old bibles, children's book collection, and miniature books - they are my treasures. Wonderful photos. ♥tlb

I too love books - there is nothing like the feel and smell and satisfying crack of the book spine as you open it. Beautiful photos
