I really enjoyed seeing all your mobile photography images in the flickr pool and reading my fellow muses' posts over the past eight days.  I think it's unanimous--everyone loves the convenience and portability of a camera phone! (well, maybe not everyone, but close...)

I have been working on my ability to use my iPhone for my street photography shots.  It definitely has its advantages--the two biggest ones being that is it completely silent (if you remember to turn the sound off!) and it is less intimidating to the people you are trying to photograph.  In fact, most times, they probably think you are just shooting off a quick text message.

For my photo above, I spotted this "taxi background" in the window of a building on 8th Avenue and I just loved it.  I figured it would make a visually interesting back drop for a photo so I parked myself on the corner and waited for someone to walk by.  I am not sure if I like it better in color or black & white, so I made a diptych out of the two photos when I was on the subway on my way to work Monday morning.  My edits were made with the camera+, PS express and diptic apps.

Shelle777's photo below is a fantastic street shot.  I love how she used her camera phone (I think it's a blackberry) to capture this couple walking beneath the scaffolding in Times Square.  The bright lights provide a mysterious and dream-like quality to the photo...a moment that may have been missed if not for her quick action with her mobile phone!

I got an iphone 4 for my husband's birthday earlier this month :)  It has been a lot of fun playing with different apps and games, but I think it has been more fun for my 3 year old son!  I swear he already knows how to use it better than me.  One of his favorite activities is to take pictures. He takes at least 20+ pictures each day and it is fun to scroll through and see life through his lens.  My favorite is that 90% of the pictures are of his feet in different areas of the house (which I think muse mosey would enjoy), the others are of random objects and unflattering pictures of the rest of the family!  So today I am featuring pictures taken by my little muse.  And of course I love this picture taken by barefoot momma, this traffic jam scenario is a common occurrence around our house :)

I edited the photos with Diptic and Lo-mob, if you have any more suggestions for fun apps that all of us need to know about add it in the comments :)

iFunography

I love my iPhone's camera. Don't get me wrong, my grown-up camera is lovely too, but my iPhone comes everywhere with me. It lets me play around with images instantly and be creative. I like to think of it as my instant camera; there's always a new app, there's always a new effect to try. I often find myself telling strangers in the park or parents in the playground about whichever new camera app I have just discovered and I can always show them instantly. I had always meant to try one of these trick shots with a print. When I realised I could use my iPhone itself as the polaroid image, I was off! (For those of you who are interested I added a light leak in iDarkroom and then processed it in Lo-Mob for the polaroid effect).

Alphabet Soup Studio's picture made me smile. Even though she hadn't been able to get into the fair because it was closed, she had still managed to have fun with her iPhone.

Do you sometimes wish your real camera had features like HDR? Or rendered pictures like a polaroid? With added light leak effects? Do you feel guilty about using your iPhone instead of your proper camera?

textures to go

I came to camera phone photography reluctantly. I am currently deep into a love affair with my DSLR and my 50mm lens with some textures thrown in to keep things fresh. I saw no need to complicate that relationship. However, with a camera phone post looming in my future, I went to the Mortal Muse Flickr pool for some inspiration. Once I saw JoGo's photo I had an epiphany. Textures? You can do textures on an iphone? I did a bit of research on apps, down loaded three - 100 Cameras, Iris and Bad-Camera - and proceeded to use up half a day of my spring break playing with photos and apps (and had to charge my phone twice). Well this just rocks my world, I can take textures mobile! Shhhhh, don't tell my big-girl camera, but I have a new boyfriend.

Thanks JoGo and thanks to all of you who have contributed your camera phone photos to the Flickr group. I have been inspired to travel light and sneak out with my new love more often.

morning commute

I do not own an iphone. In fact, I don't personally own a phone - if my day job did not provide a blackberry, I wouldn't own one at all (that's a lie, my husband would probably get me something - and I do love to check my email all the time). Furthermore, because I tote my "big camera" with me everywhere, I rarely even think to take pictures with my phone. As proven by so many incredible images in our Flickr pool, the image quality produced by my blackberry hardly measures up to that of the iphone (or any other smart phone for that matter).

Nonetheless, I find solace in my blackberry when driving to and from work. It can be quite difficult to photograph the morning skies with my "big camera"  while driving, but my cell phone does just the trick. I love that emmahero also uses her phone (she doesn't own a smart phone either) to capture everyday moments during her morning commute.

memory lane

I was going to choose one from the archives for this prompt.  I have some photos of my daughter as a toddler, taken on my old Nokia over four years ago.  They are tiny and fuzzy and poor quality, but it just doesn't matter.  I didn't have a camera of my own then, not even a point-and-shoot, but I look at those old cellphone photos and can remember in vivid detail the moments in which they were taken.

Just as I'll remember this moment, just this afternoon.  A moment in the garden with my daughter before dinner, both of us marvelling over the blossoms ready to burst into bloom on the plum tree, she in her brand new pink boots.

I'm certain that marionesdetumi's photo is one for the memory bank as well - someday that child may see the photo and exclaim "I remember those boots!".

every phone can take a picture.

To be honest I was not so sure about the assignment this week. I had many possible excuses for not find anything interesting. And yes I had a few moments of self doubt, since the days are back to grey weather again most of the time over here.

Right then as I saw my doggy sitting there so adorably i knew this had to be captured. On a phone. Of course. Because my camera was at home, where it is most of the times these days.

I discovered that my phone has a camera and haven't stopped taking pictures with it since then. Sometimes a moment just has to be captured because it is worth a picture and so fun to look back. It doesn't need a fancy camera to take wonderful pictures. You just need the love for memories, then you are all set.

This picture by vogue and lace expresses that memorability every picture holds for the viewer or photographer. I never knew a  nutella smiley would me that happy! :)

subterranean shots

When I received my iPod Touch for Christmas, I was so excited that I could enter into the realm of iphoneography. I bought a few apps and then never touched them! Has that ever happened to you? So this theme was good for me, getting me out of my dSLR comfort zone. I went into Milan last Sunday and played around with my different apps on the subway there and back. My camera phone is not going to replace my dSLR anytime soon, but it sure was fun!

The greatest part of this adventure: I finally got a shoe shot! I've been on the Milan subway so many times, wanting to capture the shoes. Italian fashion is an interesting study, and this image captures so much in one shot: The elderly gentleman, impeccably dressed to the tip of his toes; the young woman in her tights and black boots; the student in his tennis shoes and jeans. Even their hands and bags speak volumes to me.

This image by lizzard_nyc is another fun subway study. She captured the readers in the car and the techies on the platform (click on the image below to see her companion shot of the techies in the comments). An interesting look at how commuters spend their transit time, and a perfect example of why camera phones are such a wonderful tool in our photographic tool box. I will more readily pull mine out in the future!

I think back on all the moments in life that I did not capture on film... the first smiles, the first steps.  They happened in a flash and always when a camera was nowhere in sight. Thanks to digital photography, our life is now well documented and having a camera phone is a large part of preserving precious moments. 

It is the silly spontaneous snapshots that I enjoy the most.  Whether it is the excitement of catching the largest fish, trying to surf for the first time, or goofy grins showing off a recent lost tooth, it will not be about focus or composition... it will be about capturing the most genuine moments of our life. 

Keenemomma captured another childhood rite of passage, her daughter mastering the art of tying shoelaces.  A proud moment in every child's life.

I invite you to share some of your special moments with me.  The ones you would have missed without your cell phone camera.
